The Einstein-Pelham Lab Summer Program is a paid internship experience for URM high school students from the Bronx-based Pelham Lab High School Research Methods Class (taught by Mr. Daniel Layer, see collaborator letter) interested in exploring neuroscience research. Through close collaboration and mentorship with current graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, students will obtain foundational knowledge in laboratory skills, critical thinking, and scientific literacy while advancing a mentored project. Students will also be provided with guidance and mentorship in professional development to prepare for college and future career endeavors. The objectives of this program are as follows:

•Provide a paid enrichment experience to area high school students to increase college and career preparedness and competitiveness in the scientific field

•Teach student concrete applications of the scientific method through the completion of a mentored research project.

•Engage students to dissect scientific literature and think critically about scientific data through a weekly group discussion.

•Strengthen students’ scientific communication skills to prepare for an end-of-summer research symposium with other interns.

•Facilitate discussions with students about mental and emotional wellness in the professional environment.

•Provide intensive teaching opportunities to current Einstein neuroscience graduate students and postdocs.
